UK multi award winning SME focused on the development of novel industrialised algal based, sustainable, chemical free technology for the treatment of process waters and other effluents is seeking access to samples from various process water/effluent producing industries initially of materials which are usually released to the environment. Also samples from process which become contaminated by microalgae for study in its lab facilities. Co-operation envisaged under reciprocal agreement.


The award-winning SME offers sustainable water recycling and nutrient recovery solutions. Applying cutting-edge technology using microalgae at an industrial scale to treat wastewaters, process waters and other effluents from agricultural, industrial and municipal sources. Founded by experts in algae and waste water technology and a significant beneficiary of Horzion2020 funding they have also won awards including Industrial Biotechnology Leadership Forum (IBSF) Award for Innovation and Technology Development and most disruptive technology at the global TAG forum in recognition for its novel solutions in the effluent treatment industry.

They request samples from various industries that produce / discharge process waters and other effluents, initially of materials which are usually released to the environment. Also, samples from processes which are exposed to the environment (e.g. lagoons, open tanks etc) the company can screen for algae in its lab facilities. The aim is to support the expansion of the company?s knowledge to achieve exploration/development of the technology for a research project funded through Horizon 2020 SME Instrument under topic - dedicated support to biotechnology SMEs closing the gap from lab to market (2016/17).

The project is focused on the development of an innovative algae based tertiary effluent treatment and value recovery system. Samples are sought from any industrial system that is producing large volumes of process or discharging large volumes of water with high treatment costs associated and/or industries subject to environmental standards requiring efficient treatment. Industries with specific treatment needs / interest in recovering materials are also sought.

Cooperation is envisaged under reciprocal agreement with the long-term potential through further research into effluent sources to develop a possible application for accumulated microalgal biomass for example:

They have designed and patented an industrialised system to harness the power of algae to remove nutrients and other materials from the ground up using cutting edge methods and technologies, specifically for industrial use and to meet the needs of the wastewater operators for improved effluents. The benefits of such an approach are many and not limited to:

? modular & scalable - making it easily scalable and simply integrated with, or added to the end of the treatment process.
? treat a range of effluents and reduce carbon emissions - the process can be configured to make use of variety of effluent sources. Algae are able to take up nutrients, minerals and other materials from these sources and use them to grow, cleaning effluents in the process. Additionally, algae can take carbon dioxide from industrial sources such as flue gases, boosting growth rates and locking carbon emissions into biomass.

3. produces virtually no waste - turning waste in to product
